Kamp Klondike 2010

Welcome to Kamp Klondike, nestled in the birch and spruce near Dawson City, Yukon, cut through with a small creek, quietly dreaming. Looks peaceful and serene? Wait until the last weeks in June and things will change! Vans will roll in from Tsiigehtchic and Fort MacPherson, Northwest Territories, and from Ross River, Yukon. Each has travelled well over 300 miles to get here. Each is loaded with probably fourteen excited youngsters, itching to get out of their seats. They spill out, to mix with those arriving from Dawson City. The kids claim their gear, the counsellors claim their charges, and soon everyone has found a home for their week at Bible camp. They will go to bed--but probably not to sleep--confident that they will be well-fed and cared for, taking it for granted that there are fun things planned and that they will have a great time.
They are unaware--indeed, it isn't necessary that they be aware--of what has gone on behind the scenes to make this possible. They don't know how many months have gone into planning a teaching and recreation program, about the hours of planning and preparation that have gone into the food services; the time, effort and money that has gone into the upgrading and building program. Nor do they know about the prayers for strength and patience emanating from the small, loyal local staff who are already feeling maxed out. They don't know about the months of leg work that the people from SEND Alaska have done to bring them a dedicated group of counsellors. They don't know how tired the missionaries are after recruiting, registering, then driving for hours, only to face a return trip the next week! They just know that they are here, at Kamp Klondike, and it is going to be a blast!
